System Maintenance and Storing the Printer

The System Maintenance menu features advanced procedures that you will most-likely only perform when preparing your printer for storage, or when prompted by your service provider to troubleshoot certain issues. This section will guide you through each System Maintenance task.

To open the menu, on the touch screen go to Maintenance > System Maintenance.

Flush Binder System

CAUTION: This procedure cannot be performed on a dry printer (one without binder or cleaning solution inside).

 

This procedure takes about 30 minutes.

  1. Empty the waste bottle according all government regulations.
  1. On the touch screen, go to Maintenance > System Maintenance > Flush Binder System.

  1. Tap Binder to perform the flush with binder; or tap Cleaning Solution to perform the flush with Brill 3D Cleaning Solution.
    1. If switching out binder, whether you accidentally used the wrong binder or are trying to purge out old binder, use the appropriate-colored binders to flush out the system.
    2. If cleaning the binder path, use cleaning solution to flush the system.

  1. Ensure all binder tanks are filled with either binder or cleaning solution to approximately 500 mL, based on the fill line of each tank:
    1. If using binder - empty the waste bottle and fill each binder tank with the correct color.
    2. If using cleaning solution - empty the waste bottle. Remove, empty, and clean the binder tanks. Fill each binder tank with Brill 3D Cleaning Solution.
    3. Once either of these is done, tap Continue to begin the flushing process.

  1. The printer will now flush the selected material from Step 2 through the system. Keep the hood closed during this process, as opening the hood will necessitate starting this procedure over from the beginning. Once the flush has completed, you will see the screen at the right.
  2. Empty the waste bottle according all government regulations once more.
  3. Tap Clean Printhead Station to exit the flush procedure and proceed into the Clean Printhead Station procedure. If you do not wish to clean the printhead station at this time, tap Done.

Wet Binder System

This procedure can take up to an hour.

  1. Check the waste bottle. If necessary, empty the waste bottle according all government regulations.
  1. On the touch screen, go to Maintenance > System Maintenance > Wet Binder System.

  1. Tap Binder to perform the procedure with binder; or tap Cleaning Solution to perform the procedure with Brill 3D Cleaning Solution.
    1. Use binder if bringing the printer out of storage.
    2. Use cleaning solution if preparing the printer for storage.

  1. Ensure all binder tanks are filled to 500 mL of either binder or cleaning solution:
    1. If using binder - empty the waste bottle. Remove, empty, and clean the binder tanks. Fill each binder tank with the correct color. Proceed to 3.c.
    2. If using cleaning solution - empty the waste bottle. Remove, empty, and clean the binder tanks. Fill each binder tank with Brill 3D Cleaning Solution. Proceed to 3.c.
    3. Tap Continue to begin the wetting process.

  1. The printer will now wet the system with your choice of fluid from Step 2. It will also remove excess air from the system. Keep the hood closed during this process, as opening the hood will necessitate starting this procedure over from the beginning. Once the wetting has completed, you will see the screen at the right.
  2. Empty the waste bottle according all government regulations once more.
  3. Tap Clean Printhead Station to exit the wetting procedure and proceed into the Clean Printhead Station procedure. If you do not wish to clean the printhead station at this time, tap Done.

NOTE: The "Clean Printhead Station" button will be inactive at first, but will become active after 1-2 minutes.

Dry Binder System

This procedure takes about 40 minutes.

NOTE: Remove all powder from the printer before performing this procedure.

  1. Empty the waste bottle according all government regulations.
  1. On the touch screen, go to Maintenance > System Maintenance > Dry Binder System.

  1. Tap Continue to confirm you wish to perform the dry-binder-system procedure.

  1. Remove the binder tanks from the printer and clean the interior walls around the tanks.

  1. The printer will now dry the system. Keep the hood closed during this process, as opening the hood will necessitate starting this procedure over from the beginning. Once the drying has completed, you will see the screen at the right.
  2. Empty the waste bottle according all government regulations once more.
  3. Tap Clean Printhead Station to exit the drying procedure and jump into the Clean Printhead Station procedure. If you do not wish to clean the printhead station at this time, tap Done.

NOTE: Once the system is dry, some maintenance procedures will be disallowed to protect the printer from damage. This includes Printing, Clean Printhead, Flush Binder System and In-Place Cleaning. The printer will need to be wetted in with binder (see above) to resume printing activities

Clean Printhead Station Piston

  1. On the touch screen, go to Maintenance > System Maintenance > Clean Printhead Station Piston. Tap Start to begin the procedure. The gantry will move all the way to the left; keep the printer hood closed until the motion is complete.

  1. Open the printer hood and remove the printhead station. Tap Station is Removed on the touch screen.
  1. SLOWLY pour 8-10 oz. (237-296 ml) of warm water over the printhead-station piston.

  1. Wipe the piston with a damp, lint-free cloth.

  2. Dry the piston with a lint-free cloth.

  1. Once the piston and seal are clean and dry, re-grease the bottom near the seal with the provided food-safe grease.

NOTE: You can also re-grease the piston any time you hear the printhead station making scraping noises during motion, or if you observe jerky motion.

  1. Ensure the printhead station is clean and reinstall it in the printer. Tap Station is Inserted on the touch screen.

Prepare for Storing

  1. This printer routine will assume that you have performed the procedures listed below. Ensure that you have performed them in the following order:
    1. Dry Binder System
    2. Wet Binder System, using Brill 3D Cleaning Solution
    3. Dry Binder System
    4. Perform thorough cleaning of other printer areas, as seen throughout this Preventative Maintenance chapter.

      CAUTION: Ensure that you perform the Clean Printhead Station procedure if you are storing the printer.

    5. Perform the Clean Printhead Station Piston procedure.
 
  1. On the touch screen, go to Maintenance > System Maintenance > Prepare for Storing.

  1. Tap Continue to confirm you wish to prepare the printer for storing. "All the required steps in the User Guide" refers to performing the procedures listed in Step 1.

  1. The printer will lower the build and feed bins to the bottom of travel, and the printhead will home over the printhead station. Once movement has stopped, you will see the screen at the right. Shut down the printer. The printer is now ready for storage.

Take Printer Out of Storage

When you are ready to use your printer again, assuming it was properly prepared for storage as seen above: perform the Wet Binder System procedure seen above, using the appropriate binder color in each tank. Performing this procedure will unlock all other printer functions.
