Loading Powder in Feed Bin

CAUTION: ENSURE YOU HAVE READ ALL THE POWDER HANDLING touch screenDELINES BEFORE HANDLING POWDER.

CAUTION: TO ENSURE FOOD SAFETY, ALWAYS WASH HANDS THOROUGHLY BEFORE HANDLING POWDER.

CAUTION: PERFORM ALL STEPS IN THIS SECTION AWAY FROM POSSIBLE IGNITION SOURCES.

  1. If you are using new powder, sifting is optional and you may skip to Step 4. Otherwise, obtain your reclaimed powder pail, and a pail to sift the powder into. A clean scoop and sifter are strongly recommended to complete the steps below.

  1. Hold the sifter over your sifting pail, and add 1-2 scoops of powder into the sifter. Move the sifter back and forth to empty it into the pail. Repeat this until your sifting pail looks to have enough powder for the next print job, plus a half a scoop more to allow the printer to spread base layers. Throughout sifting, empty debris from tamis into regular trash.

  1. On the touch screen, go to the Controls screen. The Controls screen will take a moment to initialize, during which buttons will be grayed out; do not open the printer hood until these buttons are active. Use the Feed buttons to move the Feed Platform up or down, depending on the desired build height for upcoming print jobs. The goal is to add powder until it reaches the top of the Feed Bin when it is flattened (see future steps).
    1. Move the Feed Platform down if you need to add more powder than the current level allows.
    2. Move the Feed Platform up if you need to add less powder than the current level will go up to.

  1. Use your scoop to move two scoops of powder from your powder pail to the Feed Bin. Use either two scoops of new powder, or a combination of one scoop new and one scoop sifted powder. Hold scoop as close to the top surface as possible to avoid kicking up powder clouds.

  1. Use your tamper to pack the powder down as much as possible. Ensure you tamp evenly, including in the corners. Tamp with medium force, using elbow strength instead of shoulder strength. Putting your body weight into tamping is too much force.
  2. Repeat Steps 3-5 until the Feed Bin has the desired amount of powder. To assist in determining the amount of powder you need:
    1. Recall the height of the build file you sent over from 3D Sprint. You will need the powder to be that height, plus 25 1mm layers to create the base layers. You can use a clean, thin ruler to help measure the depth, or simply keep moving the platform down and filling the bin to the top; either is a valid measuring method. You might use this technique if you are preparing to print several jobs in a row without having to refill the feed bin.
    2. You can also use the Print Process instructions to see how the printer touch screen can assist you in achieving the correct amount of powder for one build at a time. Lower the feed bin one inch lower than the depth shown on screen to allow room for doing spreads.
